With a jaw wired shut and front teeth missing, Andy Hnilo started driving around Los Angeles with a backpack filled with a bamboo bowl, organic essential oils, a blend of four mineral-rich clays, superfoods, apple cider vinegar, and of course, the clay mask. He sought feedback, and the responses were overwhelmingly positive. Friends who had seen him in the hospital were amazed at how quickly his appearance improved.

Beta Testing the Product: Without a website, price, or company name, Andy gave the product away for about a year or two to beta test and gather feedback. The rising interest in something created out of necessity lit a fire inside him to pursue the venture further. Word began to spread about the ‘Clay Mask’ made out of a tiny apartment in North Hollywood, CA.

Brand Development: Designing and creating the brand was the hardest part. Advice was abundant, but Andy remained intrigued by sleek logos from companies like Nike, Hugo Boss, and Lexus. He refused to compromise on quality, sourcing the best ingredients without worrying about margins initially. Miron Glass was chosen for packaging liquid products and sleek BPA-free plastic for others, aligning with the vision of a Lexus meets Hugo Boss brand identity.

Launching the Business: The turning point came when Mary Halls invited Andy to San Diego to try the product on her MedSpa clients. Intrigued by his social media activities, she loved the mask enough to include it in her treatments, marking the first time someone paid serious money for Andy’s creation. This moment fueled his confidence and built momentum.

Building the Online Presence: Andy fell in love with the brand Bulletproof for its passion and attention to detail, leading him to become a Bulletproof Ambassador. He was featured on the Bulletproof Radio podcast, which generated a huge response from fans worldwide. Within days of the podcast airing, he set a price for the mask and began accepting payments via PayPal. A Shopify e-commerce store was launched, and the brand name ‘Alitura’ was chosen, meaning ‘feeding and nourishing’ in Latin.
